US Folding E-Bikes Under $1,500
Folding e-bikes for riders who need compact storage, car-boot portability, or a bike that fits under a desk. This collection covers US-available folding models priced under $1,500.
Folding e-bikes solve a storage and transport problem first and a riding problem second. The fold is what lets a bike live in a car boot, an RV bay, a small apartment, or under a desk, and the segment under $1,500 is where most US folding models sit. Frame designs cluster around 20-inch wheels, with both standard and fat-tyre configurations, the latter trading weight for stability and rough-surface comfort.
The spec to scrutinise first is total weight, because a folding bike's portability claim is only as good as what you can actually lift. Models in this bracket span roughly 18 to over 35 kg, and the heaviest fat-tyre folders are realistically rollable rather than carryable. After weight, compare battery capacity in Wh, brake type, and whether the battery is removable. Folded dimensions are inconsistently published by manufacturers, so where compactness is critical, confirm the folded size with the brand before purchase.
Current segment overview
The US folding segment under $1,500 is led by Lectric and Heybike by model count, with Velotric, DYU, Engwe, and Ride1Up also represented. Every qualifying model uses a hub motor; no mid-drive folders appear in the bracket. Torque sensing is present on a meaningful minority of the segment, concentrated in the upper half of the price range, and entry prices start in the mid-$300s.
Methodology25 models
This collection includes US-available e-bikes with a Folding frame and a listed price under $1,500. Results are sorted by weight (lightest first). Folding e-bikes vary significantly in fold size, fold speed, and ride quality. At this price point, most models use rear hub motors with 500-750W power ratings and fat or standard tyres. The key differentiators are total weight (which determines how easy the bike is to carry when folded), battery capacity in Wh, tyre width (fat tyres add stability but increase weight), and whether the bike includes a throttle. Published fold dimensions are not always listed in manufacturer specifications.

Questions about this segment
How heavy is too heavy for a folding e-bike?
It depends entirely on how the fold is used. For lifting into a car boot or carrying up more than a few steps, bikes under about 23 kg (50 lbs) are manageable for most adults, and under 20 kg is comfortable. Fat-tyre folding models commonly weigh 30 kg or more, which works fine when the fold is for storage in a garage or RV but defeats the purpose for anyone planning to carry the bike regularly.
A useful test is to consider the heaviest single lift in your routine, such as a boot lip or staircase, and check the bike's listed weight against it honestly. The battery can usually be removed before lifting, which typically saves 2 to 4 kg.
Are fat tyres worth it on a folding e-bike?
Fat tyres add stability, traction on loose surfaces, and ride comfort over potholes, which suits riders using a folder for mixed surfaces or as an RV companion bike. The costs are significant weight, higher rolling resistance that reduces range, and bulkier folded dimensions.
For purely urban commuting on paved roads, standard-width tyres keep the bike lighter, more efficient, and easier to handle when folded. The fat-tyre configuration earns its trade-offs when the riding genuinely leaves smooth pavement, not as a default choice.
