What is the difference between Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes?
Class 2 caps both pedal assist and throttle at 20 mph. Class 3 raises pedal assist to 28 mph but usually limits the throttle to 20 mph or removes it. Class 3 suits road and bike-lane commutes, while Class 2 is often more practical where multi-use path access is restricted.
How much battery range do I need for daily commuting?
Plan for roughly 18 to 22 watt-hours per mile at higher speeds. A 12 mile round trip needs about 220 to 265 Wh, so a 500 Wh pack leaves comfortable headroom. For 20 mile days, a 650 to 720 Wh battery is more practical.
How realistic are manufacturer range claims?
Claimed figures are measured at the lowest assist level under ideal conditions. Real-world range is typically 40 to 70 percent of the maximum, so an 80 mile claim often delivers 35 to 55 miles. Comparing watt-hours per claimed mile is more reliable than the headline number.
Is a mid-drive motor worth it over a hub motor?
For flat commutes under 10 miles a hub motor performs similarly for less money. On hills, mixed terrain or daily distances beyond 15 miles, a mid-drive’s gearing delivers stronger climbing and more range per charge. The trade-offs are faster drivetrain wear and slightly higher weight.
Does a torque sensor improve battery range?
Generally yes. The motor outputs power in proportion to rider effort instead of a fixed level, with typical real-world gains of 10 to 25 percent over a cadence-only system. Battery capacity in watt-hours still remains the primary range spec to compare.
How long does a belt drive last compared to a chain?
Carbon-reinforced belts typically last 15,000 to 30,000 km versus 3,000 to 5,000 km for a chain. Belts do not stretch and need no lubrication, so total drivetrain cost over the bike’s life is usually lower despite a higher unit price.
