EU Urban E-Bikes With Removable Batteries

Designed for riders without garage or ground-floor charging. A removable battery means you can bring just the battery indoors to charge at home or at work.

A removable battery separates where the bike parks from where the battery charges. For riders in apartments, offices, and buildings without a socket near the bike storage, this is the difference between an e-bike that fits daily life and one that doesn't: the pack comes out and charges at a desk, in a hallway, or in the kitchen while the bike stays locked outside or in a communal store. Removal designs vary between downtube, rear-rack, and underseat mechanisms, and the daily convenience of that mechanism matters as much as any headline spec.

The comparison points within this segment are the battery's carrying weight, typically 2.5 to 4 kg depending on capacity, the quality of the lock securing the pack to the frame, and whether the brand sells spare batteries for riders who want one pack at home and one at work. Because removable designs now span the whole EU urban market from value direct-to-consumer bikes to premium dealer brands, price, motor type, and sensor type vary more within this collection than in any other on the site, and mid-drive motors are strongly represented.

Current segment overview

Across the 25 e-bikes in this collection, the median listed price is €1,099 and the median claimed range is 100 km, based on the Velo Index EU dataset as of August 2026.

Removable batteries are now the dominant configuration in the EU urban market, and this is the broadest collection on Velo Index as a result, spanning value direct-to-consumer brands such as Tenways, Engwe, Fiido, and Cyrusher alongside traditional manufacturers including Gazelle, Scott, Canyon, Merida, and Moustache. Prices run from under €700 to premium territory, with both hub and mid-drive motors strongly represented. Removal mechanisms differ between downtube, rack, and underseat designs, which affects daily convenience as much as the spec sheet does.

Methodology25 models

This collection includes EU-available e-bikes where the manufacturer specifies a Yes for Removable Battery and which have a Step-Over or Step-Through frame. Results are sorted by price (lowest first). Removable battery designs vary between models. Some slide out from the downtube, some unlock from a rear rack, and some detach from under the seat. The ease of removal and the weight of the battery itself differ significantly. When comparing, also note the battery capacity in Wh (which determines range) and whether the frame style suits your intended use.

To keep collections readable and fast to compare, this page displays up to 25 models. Results are shown in sorted order. No models are manually selected or excluded.

Questions about this segment

How heavy is a removable e-bike battery to carry?

Most removable packs in the EU urban market weigh between 2.5 and 4 kg, scaling roughly with capacity: a 360Wh pack sits near the bottom of that band and a 700Wh pack near the top. Carried in a bag or by an integrated handle, this is comparable to a laptop bag with a book or two in it, manageable for a daily routine but noticeable on a long walk.

Removing the battery also makes the bike itself meaningfully lighter to lift, which matters for anyone carrying it up steps to a storage area. For riders who find the carry weight a concern, the smaller-capacity end of the segment trades range for a lighter daily load.

Does removing the battery protect against theft?

Partially. Taking the battery indoors removes the most valuable and most commonly stolen component, and it makes the bike far less attractive to ride away, since an e-bike without its pack is a heavy unassisted bicycle. Battery packs are also individually keyed on most models, so the pack cannot simply be lifted from a locked bike.

It does not secure the frame itself, so a proper lock remains essential, and insurance conditions typically require one regardless. The realistic framing is that a removable battery reduces the value of what is left on the street and eliminates the scenario of a stolen or vandalised pack, rather than replacing conventional security.

How should a removable battery be charged and stored indoors?

Use the charger supplied with the bike, charge on a hard non-flammable surface away from exits, and avoid charging unattended overnight. Room-temperature charging is also kinder to the cells than charging a pack that has just come in from freezing conditions; letting it warm up first improves both safety and battery life.

For storage beyond a few weeks, lithium packs last longest kept at partial charge, around half full, in a cool dry place. Any pack showing swelling, damage, or unusual heat should be taken out of service and assessed by the brand or a qualified shop rather than charged again.
